A week filled with beautiful weather helped drive spectators to what turned out to be a successful 95th annual Laconia Motorcycle Week.

Organizers said the event generated $100 million for the state.

“This year has really been phenomenal,” said Jennifer Anderson, director of the Laconia Motorcycle Week Association. “What a way to celebrate the 95th anniversary. We could not have asked for better weather.”

On its final day on Sunday, the rally was still attracting large crowds, with Lakeside Avenue in Laconia still packed with motorcycles.

“It was really awesome,” said Nellon Sanders, of Memphis, Tennessee. “I love the people. I love seeing all the bikes and motorcycles.”

Sanders travels to different motorcycle rallies across the country for work, and said he made great money during the nine days of Bike Week.

“I think I like New Hampshire a little bit better,” Sanders said, in comparison to rallies in other states. “New Hampshire’s awesome. The people are awesome, the vibes are cool, the people are so much fun – I love it. It’s super cool.”

Laconia police have had a noticeable presence throughout the week. The department said the number of arrests are about the same compared to recent years, but crashes are up – about 36 total – which is attributed to larger-than-normal crowds.

Organizers said the turnout surpassed their expectations.

“As the week progressed, we had a lot of last-minute day-trippers coming in and people that were looking for rooms,” Anderson said.

People traveled from all over, and the Granite State scenery did not disappoint.

“You know, the air, the whole pine smell – and then there’s (my) dog, the dog actually likes the trip, too,” said Scott Thomas, who traveled from Delray Beach, Florida, with his dog, Lila. Thomas said he hoped to find a tiny motorcycle vest for the pooch.

Others took the opportunity to look into buying new bikes.

“I thought that if I was interested in buying one, this is the place to go, because you don’t know what you want until you come here,” said John Wouters, who was visiting from New Jersey. “You can choose and pick and find the one you want.”

Plans are already underway for next year’s Bike Week, with organizers saying there will be much to look forward to these next few years leading up to the 100th anniversary.

Israeli tech start-up, Ride Vision, has announced a camera-based system which allows your bike to warn you of impending crashes before they happen.

Software interprets the images from cameras placed around the bike and alerts riders to possible danger with a flashing light.

Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) have generally focused on vehicles of the four-wheeled variety so far, but Ride Vision’s Collision Aversion Technology (CAT) software is aiming to change that with the announcement of a $2.5m (around £1.9m) seed funding round.

Uri Lavi, co-founder and CEO of Ride Vision, said on the company’s website:

“The challenge has been technological. It’s technically challenging to provide any technology solution that adds cost, space or weight, or that requires multiple points of vision…. to a single, narrow motorcycle.

“We know that motorcycles are unique vehicles and demand unique solutions. We understand that motorcycles’ road behaviour and threats analysis is different than cars. We maintain the importance of motorcycles simplicity while augmenting it with the Predictive Vision. We empower riders with additional safety instruments while extending seamlessly footage capturing & telematics derivation that are simply awesome, especially for the avid rider.”

Harley-Davidson, the iconic American bike, is at the centre of a trade battle between India and the US. But a higher duty is unlikely to significantly impact one of the world’s bestknown motorcycle brands.

If US president Donald Trump has used tariffs on Harley-Davidson as a symbol of Indian protectionism, the government too has opted to counter the American administration’s move to raise import duty on some steel and aluminium products by targeting the premium bike for additional duty, ..

The government has estimated total damages of higher tariffs on high-end bikes to be about $5 million (around Rs 35 crore), with officials suggesting that the bike-maker was not unduly worried about import duty in the country and is lining up expansion, including a focus on the sale of apparel and accessories.

Company sources said Harley-Davidson is trying to understand, whether the proposed duty hike is on fully-imported ones or even on extended locally-made manufactured motorbikes. It ..

Unlike several of its rivals, Harley-Davidson’s operations are somewhat insulated as it locally assembles a majority of motorcycles it sells in India, which helps lower the duty burden. The company has its facility at Bawal in Haryana and its portfolio in the country includes 16 motorcycles.
