EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) – A man convicted of killing the leader of the El Paso Bandidos Motorcycle Club has received his sentence.
According to a sherif’s deputy at the trial, Javier Gonzalez was sentenced to 56 years in prison for the murder of Juan Martinez Jr. in 2017.
Gonzalez was also sentenced to 30 years in prison for two counts of engaging in organized criminal activity and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, the El Paso Times reports.
Additional 30 and 15-year sentences were also given for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, according to the deputy.
The jury reached the guilty verdict on Wednesday. During closing arguments of the sentencing phase, defense attorney Omar Carmona asked the jury for a lighter sentence.
He told the jury “no human being is beyond saving,” and asked them to consider that the shooting could have been a result of self-defense.
“If you had considered self-defense but ultimately decided on guilty, this might be the way to sort that out,” Carmona said.
However, Assistant District Attorney Rebecca Tarango said Gonzalez was aware of what he was doing and is not remorseful.

“This is not a teen who was with the wrong crowd,” Tarango said. “This was planned. This was throughout. He is a grown man.”
Tarango held up a denim vest with motorcycle patches and show the jury a “1%” tattoo that Gonzalez got following the shooting. She claimed that the “1%” means he follows his own law.
“I want you to see who he really is,” she said. “These are his opinions. This is how he represents himself.”
