This week’s raid was the culmination of an investigation that began after Portland police notified state authorities in February about complaints they had been receiving.

“Neighbors were concerned about the number of cars in the area, you know, activity that was going on, in the evenings and late, late into the evenings,” Portland First Selectman Ryan Curley said.

Curley said when he first heard about the complaints in January or February, baseball season at nearby Nolan Field had not started. Once parents and children involved in youth baseball began frequenting the area in the spring, the complaints became more frequent.

“People were in the parking lot where there might have been … I don’t know if there were drug deals or whatnot,” Curley said. “But, it sounded like the park was not being used for wholesome activities after hours. So that’s when we made the decision to close that.”

Comments posted to the Portland CT Facebook Page have expressed mixed reactions to this week’s raid. Some feel it was an overreaction to arrest so many people for marijuana, which is now legal in Connecticut. However, Curley said it had a quality-of-life impact on those in the neighborhood.
