Actor, photographer, and author Norman Reedus isn’t afraid to push boundaries in his roles throughout his career. In one of his upcoming roles, Reedus didn’t push things too far as he plays a bike club member and gets to ride a motorcycle. But that’s where the similarities to his real life end; in his role as Funny Sonny in The Bikeriders, Reedus is unrecognizable.
The Bikeriders is written and directed by Jeff Nichols, known for Take Shelter and Mud and his long-running partnership with actor Michael Shannon, who has starred in all his feature films. The film is inspired by the 1968 photo book by Danny Lyon, which chronicled the life of the Outlaws Motorcycle Club. Lyon followed the club from 1963 to 1967 in an “attempt to record and glorify the life of the American bike rider.”
The film follows a fictional Midwest club, the Vandals, between 1965 and 1973, as seen through the eyes of one of its member’s love interest. Kathy is married to Benny, a wild and reckless biker loyal to the club leader, Johnny. She recounts the club’s evolution and, over a decade of changes, which transforms the club into a more sinister gang.
